So you would like to take the leap and get on a rebreather but which course should you take? Air diluent or Helitrox.
If you are not a helitrox or trimix diver yet on open circuit, to be honest, I recommend the air diluent. It is enough new information to learn and skills to achieve on that course already.

Why would you take Helitrox for only an additional 5 m depth limit? Well, the maximum recommended gas density on rebreather is actually 30m EAD. High gas density can cause CO2 retention, which is really not fun on CCR. Also, since diving is a bit more complex and requires a higher level of awareness, a lower narcotic level is desirable while rebreather diving. With helitrox, you can add come helium to the mix while keeping 21% O2 to achieve this.
Skills and requirements are the same:
Besides the general rebreather theory, you will learn all unit-specific information necessary to safely operate your Symbios unit.
You will be able to do basic maintenance, sensor changes and diagnose any possible errors, so you will not need to cancel a dive!
Course prerequisites:
- Minimum age 18
- Proof of 50 logged dives
- Minimum certification level of TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver, Deco Procedures Diver or Helitrox diver or equivalent from agencies recognized by TDI
- If you want to use sidemount configuration, you must hold the TDI Sidemount Diver Certification or equivalent and provide proof of 10 logged sidemount dives
If you already have the 30m certificate:
- Minimum age 18.
- TDI Air Diluent CCR Diver certified or equivalent.
- Minimum of 30 hours and 30 dives on the Symbios CCR unit.
- Six months CCR diving experience.
Prerequisites for crossover
If completing a unit crossover, you must have at least 10 logged CCR dives in the last 12 months and certification from a TDI-recognised agency.
How long is the course?
The course is a minimum of 6 days (minimum 8 dives plus theory sessions). Extra days will be arranged if necessary.
Upgrade from Air Diluent diver certification takes 3-4 days. (5 dives)
Crossover course is also 3-4 days usually. (5 dives)
It is a very intense course, therefore a level of pre-study is necessary and expected. After all, it will leave you with more in-water time during the course!

1450EUR (vat incl) plus learning materials and certification (110EUR)
It is possible to rent a unit for the duration of the course, however, you will need your own eventually anyway, mostly also due that places in the world where you can rent rebreather are very rare. Therefore, we highly suggest purchasing your unit before the course, and we will guide you all the way from choosing your personal configuration, delivery, unboxing and set up, making the unit yours. Rent is 100EUR/day including O2 and bailout gasses. Sorb is 9EUR/Kg
